The Demoniac

This skit is perfect for combining human actors and puppets. The demoniac, Jesus and pigs would all be puppets. The father and his daughter would be played by human actors. A simple set would be a bed and chair place in front and slightly off center of a puppet stage. We used pig puppets but small stuffed pigs would work as well. We threw them over the top of the puppet stage as they "ran off the cliff."

This script, The Demoniac, could also be done with puppets alone. Put the father and daughter on one level and the Bible story on the other level. I would suggest the Bible story being on the upper level so that when the pigs are thrown over the edge, they land inside the puppet stage and aren't a distraction to the audience.

The Demoniac script was used as a lesson that Jesus has power over evil and is based on Mark 5:1-20.

(A little girl enters, looks around the room and under the bed, then gets into bed.)

Father: Good night.

Girl: Good night daddy. Please leave the light on.

Father: Why?

Girl: I can’t sleep with the light off.

Father: Why not?

Girl: Because monsters are under my bed and come out when the light is off.

Father: There are no monsters under the bed.

Girl: You can’t see them with the light on.

Father: I see. (Pause) I want to read you a story before bed.

Girl: Is it a fairy tale?

Father: No. This is a true story from the Bible.

Girl: O.K.

(Father gets Bible and begins to read)

Father: They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet Him. (Man puppet enters. He should look “wild.”) This man lived in the tombs and no one could bind him. He had been chained but he tore the chains. No one was strong enough to subdue him. (Jesus puppet enters)

Girl: This is more scary than monsters under my bed.

Father: When the man saw Jesus, he ran to Him and fell on his knees. (Man runs to Jesus and kneels)

Man: What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Do not hurt me.

Jesus: What is your name?

Man: My name is legion for we are many. Do not send us away.

Father: A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. (Pigs enter – on a higher tier if possible.)The demons begged Jesus to allow them to go into the pigs. He gave them permission and the evil spirits went into the pigs. (Pigs are thrown over stage) The herd ran down the bank into the lake and drowned. The men tending the pigs ran to town and told the people. The townspeople came to see what had happened and saw the man who had the demons sitting by Jesus. The man was dressed and in his right mind. As Jesus got ready to leave, the man asked to go with him.

Man: Please, let me go with you.

Jesus: Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how he has had mercy on you.

Father: So the man went away and began to tell how much Jesus had done for Him. And all the people were amazed. (Jesus and man exit)

Girl: Jesus has power over evil!

Father: That’s right. We don’t need to be afraid.

Girl: Not even of monsters under my bed.

Father: (Laughing) That’s right. Good night.

Girl: Good night Daddy… And don’t forget to turn out the light.

(Father exits as little girl “goes to sleep.” She would exit after the lights go down.)
