Repairing A Wall

Repairing a Wall is based on Isaiah 58:1-14. This drama, for 4 actors, is a good introduction for a sermon or lesson on relationships.

(Actor 1 enters and starts to build a wall with stacking imaginary blocks. Actor 2 enters)

Actor 2: What are you doing?

Actor 1: Repairing a wall.

Actor 2: Oh. (Pause to watch) Can I help?

Actor 1: Sure.

(They build for a few seconds, then actor 3 enters)

Actor 3: (watches, then:) What are you doing?

Actors 1&2: Repairing a wall.

Actor 3: Can I help?

Actor 1: Sure.

(Actor 3 starts to help and they build for a little while, then actor 4 enters)

Actor 4: (watches, then:) What are you doing?

Actors 1,2&3: Repairing a wall.

Actor 4: Can I help?

Actor 1: Sure.

(Actor 4 starts to help. They should be lined up building the wall side by side. After a few seconds 4 asks 3)

Actor 4: Is this going to be a big wall?

Actor 3: (to 2) Is this going to be a big wall?

Actor 2: (to 1) Is this going to be a big wall?

Actor 1: Yes, and it needs to be strong.

Actor 2: (to 3) Yes, and it needs to be strong.

Actor 3: (to 4) Yes, and it needs to be strong.

(They work for a bit)

Actor 4: (to 3) Why, who are we keeping out?

Actor 3: (to 2) Why, who are we keeping out?

Actor 2: (to 1) Why, who are we keeping out?

Actor 1: Nobody.

Actor 2: (to 3) Nobody.

Actor 3: (to 4) Nobody.

(They continue to build but with puzzled looks at each other and at Actor 1)

Actor 4: (Finally stops building) So, why are we repairing the wall?

Actor 3: (stops building) So, why are we repairing the wall?

Actor 2: (stops building) So, why are we repairing the wall?

Actor 1: (stands up and talks to others) We’re not repairing this wall to keep people out. We’re repairing this wall to include them.

Actor 4: Just exactly who are we including?

Actor 1: Why, everyone.

Actors 2, 3 & 4: Everyone!?!

Actor 1: That’s right.

Actor 4: Wait a minute! I have this guy who works for me. I don’t have to include him do I?

Actor 1: Of course. You can build the wall by treating him with respect and paying him fairly.

Actor 3: What about my neighbor who lost his job several weeks ago? You’re not going to include him are you?

Actor 1: Of course. We can build that wall by buying him some groceries and making sure he can pay his electric bill.

Actor 2: Hold it right there! This wall isn’t going to include my brother is it? After all, we hardly get along anymore. He doesn’t do things the way I think they should be done.

Actor 1: Building a wall would mean that you show love even when you disagree.

Actor 2: To my brother?

Actor 3: To my neighbor?

Actor 4: To my employee?

Actors 2,3&4: I don’t think so.

Actor 4: Come on guys. We don’t have time to work on this wall anymore. It’s time to go to church.

(They exit – actor 1 goes back to building as the lights go down)
